The 2009 Horticultural Show.
Once
again The Horticultural Society's Show was a resounding success. Mrs Daphne Pawson, kindly presented our Show prizes.
With the
recent dry weather there were a number of last minute changes to entries; nevertheless the standard of fruit, vegetables and
flowers on display was exceptional.
In 2008 we introduced an entry for gentlemen
bakers, who had to produce a boiled fruit pudding.
This class attracted by far the most
entries all of which were excellent.
Chaps, start honing your cooking skills for 2010.
The Show
attracts entries in all classes; Produce, Floral, and Artistic from members and non-members alike.
The entries
are to a very high standard and judging is undertaken by RHS approved judges.
2009 was
our last year in the Marquee.
Horticultural Shows rely on entries from Fruit
and vegetable growers.
Throughout the country the regular growers are all becoming older
and unfortunately younger people are not growing for the shows.
Many indeed have allotments.
In fact demand has rarely been higher, however they are not entering their produce for showing.
This year
our entries were down by 20%. Without at least 400+ entries the marquee would just look empty and we would not be happy with
that.
Also there has to be considered the staging of the event which requires a high degree of organisation
and funding.
Our next Show will be on 28th August 2010 in The Memorial Hall
